San Diego Unified teacher for 22 years, 5 years as GATE Writing Instructor, Jean is a favorite of her PiCS kids, as well as her middle school students! 

“I want to show these kids how amazing they are…and then watch them soar!”

Mary Handfelt

Founding Board Member, Governance

First-gen USF, with 20 years in corporate training, video production and writing Mary coaches kids in how to tell their stories on college applications and scholarships.

“I volunteer because their success matters to all of us.”

Jocelyn Talbott

Founding Board Member, Marketing

First-gen graduate of UCSD in International Studies, Jocelyn spent 4 years as an Ashford University Admissions Counselor. She knows where all the roadblocks are and how to go-around them.

“With help and support, there’s no limit to how far you can rise up from where you came.”

Julie Tunnell

Founding Board Member, Advisory

Previously a financial analyst and auditor, Julie was Professor of Accounting at San Diego City College for 18 years.  She assists the founders of Build-a-Miracle where she also volunteers.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to pursue their educational dreams.”

Allison Molinaar

A Certified Independent College Counselor and UCSB Application Reader, Allison is a tireless giver-helper-inspirer-guide-and-mentor, and spends many weekends serving with Build a Miracle in Mexico.

Katie Boom

Grant Writer

As a post-grad at UMass, Katie developed a passion for helping low-income and first-gen students with resources to graduate from college.  She is currently a Graduate Admissions Counselor for University of Illinois, Chicago.

Jackie Woolley, Ph.D.

Founding Board Member

A Certified Independent College Counselor with both a BA and Ph.D. in Psychology, Jackie has a heart for those who struggle most and calls them all her children.

Stephen Colon

Stephen runs San Diego’s CONNECT2Careers, and the San Diego Workforce Partnership, providing PiCS with powerful tools and connections for young job seekers.
